The Modern Home: Luxury Design and Interiors in India is a compendium of 35 houses and apartments designed by significant Indian Architects and Designers. The book attempts to epitomize the notion of the luxurious Modern Indian Home, while embodying the hybrid concepts that transcend geographic boundaries and influences.
Alluding to the vernacular, a rich sense of culture and tradition is ever present as The Mango House spills over from the dust jacket, at both ends, and spreads out, covering the span of the open book. Featured over 14 pages, The Mango House is resplendent and is captured in all its glory through vivid image spreads, interspersed with concept notes that delve deeper into the story and thought behind the abode.
Founded in 2006, ET ACETECH was conceptualized to bring all the architects, designers, developers, engineers, contracting companies, material suppliers and technology providers under one roof for displaying and sourcing products expediently. Encouraged by the optimistic response to ACETECH each year, ACETECH 2015 embarked on the road to pursue its aim and vision, to widen the reach of the platform, in order to ensure it becomes the converging point for Industry specialists across the globe. To accomplish the objective ACETECH launched ACE INTERFACE.
Puran Kumar, along with 4 other eminent architects, was invited to participate as a panelist at ACE INTERFACE 2016, Bangalore. Moderated by Jürgen Mayer of J. Mayer H. Architects, the panel was titled: “The Tactile Form – Patterns of Architecture and Materiality”. The discourse sought to explore the ideas of repetition, ornament, materiality and sensual experience in architecture.
The Mango House was presented and discussed not only through the haptic qualities of surfaces but also experiential aspects of space – atmospheres, smell, lighting, daily rhythms and temporal repeats like seasonal patterns.
FOAID started with the idea of celebrating the glory of Indian Architecture & Design. Since its inception, it aims to create a benchmark where the stalwarts & the future designers share a common platform to discuss how the design world has transformed & innovated to create a future of spell bound figures. FOAID is a festival of creative minds to meet & discuss the new facets of the design fraternity wherein Puran Kumar moderated one of the many panel discussions, at FOAID 2016 (Mumbai), with the title ‘The Domain of Creativity – Whose Design is it Anyway?’. The event ensued with a presentation followed by an interactive panel discussion and Q&A session, with six other architects serving as panel members.
Construction Week India Awards are the most recognized and highly valued awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of the country’s construction and infrastructure players. The awards recognize and reward individual excellence, corporate prowess and project success. Puran Kumar was invited to serve as a member on the Grand Jury to review, score and adjudge the winners over several categories.
The “Think Turf Series”, an editorial initiative by the Architect & Interiors magazine, is a conversation between these personified ideologies and the fraternity. At the Ahmedabad edition of the Forum, Puran Kumar was invited as the Keynote Speaker to elaborate on these ideas which was presented under the title ‘Dimensions of Design’.
The definition of ‘what makes a home’ is changing every minute and we are currently on the verge of a major shift in the way we live and interact with our environment. The event comprised of Q&A sessions and interactive panel discussions in which Puran Kumar participated as a panel member.
With the rapid growth of the built environment and the adverse effect on the natural, Fensterbau Frontale India 2016 hosted at the Bombay Exhibition brought to the forefront a panel discussion on the importance of energy efficient facade design. With every architect’s conviction in their respective beliefs and practice, Puran Kumar summed up that “Net Zero energy building is essentially energy conservation on all ends- heat, water and air.
50 Amazing Homes -is a platform showcasing the outstanding architectural marvels from around the nation. PKA’s contribution to the distinguished collection is special as it documents and represents the very style and conviction associated with the Home. The Mango House recreates the magic in a theoretic presentation through larger than life images and drawings, bringing to life the earthy abode.
This event was designed to offer an opportunity to maximise one’s learning and business potential. It comprised of Q&A sessions and interactive panel discussions along with in-depth presentations, in which Puran Kumar participated as a panel member for ‘Smart Office Design & Build’.
PKA completed 20 years of practice in 2013. The Firm made the most of this opportunity by celebrating PKA@20, along with recognising key milestones and the people who helped formed a part of the journey! The celebrations were spread over a few events, organised to share the occasion among clients, team and friends of PKA!

As per the IGen Design Forum format, the event comprised of interactive sessions with industry leaders and the architectural fraternity. They jointly tackled and addressed issues facing our emerging India. Amongst all the sessions, there was a presentation given by Puran Kumar on the ‘Simplicity of Design’ which highlighted the need of uncluttered design principles in an universal context, thereby making them efficient and pleasing to use in our otherwise cramped lives.
IIID Awards for Excellence in Interior Design, are one of the coveted awards in the country for recognising talent and honouring excellence in the interior design fraternity. The awards jury comprised eminent interior designers, design journalists, academicians and architects including Puran Kumar. This design extravaganza ended with the hope of raising the bar of excellence in interior design to a new height every year.
The Delhi Architecture Festival 2016 kicked off with a series of events aimed at bridging the gap between architects, designers, planners and students.
The 3 day event culminated with the DAF Awards 2016 which saw architectural and design entries pour in from across the globe, with studios vying for the coveted award.
We were extremely delighted to learn that the residence, in Alibaug, was lauded by a distinguished panel of judges comprising a group of leading academicians and practicing architects from across the country. The Mango House, with its deep rooted vernacular belief was adjudged the winner in the Residential (Built) Category. The modern home stood out as a shining example of functional clarity all the while respecting the integrity of the site and accentuating the purity of the materials used.
The winning entries have also been featured in the DAF 2016 book that was unveiled with much fanfare, at the event.
The third edition of AD50 was an endeavour to spotlight the best in residential design across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The carefully curated list focused on individuals and firms whose projects represent the power of architecture to transcend functionality, create enduring spaces for its inhabitants, and define new idioms for the cities in which they are located.
The Mango House, lauded for its simplicity in style, richness in texture and spirited atmosphere was featured and Puran Kumar Architects was awarded a place among the AD50.
We are delighted at being named among the top 50 stalwarts within the sub-continent.
The studio showcased a mix of projects completed within the year of 2014 – 2015. As per the Artists in Concrete Awards (AICA) format, they were assessed amongst the top entries from South Asia region. The Mango House story connected with the jury and was presented the commendation award for the best ‘Interior – Residence’.
This event is known to consolidate and expand the contribution of the Interior Design profession towards improving quality of life in contemporary and future societies by the sharing of knowledge and experience and the understanding of responsibilities. Among many competent projects, we were pleased to know, ‘The Mango House‘ got awarded the Design Excellence Zone Z2 Regional ‘Runner Up’ under the ‘Residential Single Dwelling’ category.
It is an event bringing together the leaders of Construction, Architecture and the Design Industry to celebrate excellence in their respective fields. Formerly known as ACETECH Felicitation and Gala Networking Night, it is conceptualized to felicitate pioneers and trailblazers in the industry. ‘The Mango House’ charmed its way into the competition, and picked up the award for winner in ‘Best Interior Design – Residential’ category.
The International Space Design Awards aims to discover and recognize the best designs in the fields of architecture and interior design. Out of diverse entries and a painstaking short listing, comes another significant and rewarding moment for PKA. Bringing home a nomination for the best Residential Architectural Design on an international level, The Mango House creates waves for its unique style and raw beauty.
‘Inside Awards’ – one of the most prestigious international awards – is co-hosted along with ‘World Architecture Festival – WAF’, and focuses on celebrating the world’s best in interior design. The understated yet heart warming project, ‘The Mango House’ entered the competition in the Residential category. The project got shortlisted, as the only one from India, and as one of the eight finalists amongst the World’s finest residences for the year 2015. In Nov ’15, TMH made an appearance by way of a live presentation at the WAF ’15 in Singapore, and was lauded as an impressive attempt at an organic approach to residential designing.
Artists in Concrete Awards (AICA) Festival is an annual celebration of architecture, interiors and landscape design. ‘The Mango House’, surpassing conventional residential design, competed with projects from Asia’s elite designers.The design philosophy and principles of TMH was esteemed highly and received an honorary commendation award in the ‘Architecture– Residence’ category.
The firm participated in the regional awards by showcasing ’14 Pali Village’ – a studio for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Pictures Pvt Ltd. The unique character of the project came from catering to a modern production studio within a traditional village setting. It won the ‘Runners Up’ awards in the ‘Workplace – Small’ category.
Established in 1993 as PKA, the design studio is a well-established practice providing complete design solutions in interior-architecture. With corporate interiors as its core strength, the studio has slowly expanded its horizons to designing other spaces as well and has a wide spectrum of projects from corporate to residential including bungalows and villas.
The past two decades have seen the practice grow from a small design studio to becoming one of the preferred practices in the industry. Effective space planning, clutter-free designs and precision in time management are the prominent features of each project and have become the hallmark of the studio. With strict processes in place that are followed for each project, the studio has earned a formidable reputation that holds it in great stead.

Puran Kumar accredits the success of the studio to the single-minded determination of the team and its focused approach towards design and delivery. This has gained the studio the trust of almost all its clients who have since then continued their association with PKA and the team.
Puran Kumar established his design studio in Mumbai in 1993, after working for a few years on a diverse range of corporate projects. An advocate of uncomplicated design expressions, he supports and practices the use of natural building materials that lend an everlasting appeal to any design.
From large corporate offices – both domestic and multinational – to residential projects that range from apartments and bungalows to villas, Puran’s repertoire of architecture and interior projects is as wide as it is simple.
His hallmark space planning and clean-line designs are a natural extension of Puran’s sensibilities as a person and an architect. A believer of the fact that to build spaces for anyone, the designer needs to understand the occupant(s) first, Puran invests time and effort in observing and learning about his clients through constant interaction. This has helped him in developing an intuitive perception of the client’s needs.
An IIT Roorkee alumnus, Puran believes in flowing with the tide and making the best of what life offers, and enjoys whatever phase of creativity he is in.
A sports enthusiast and a lover of performing arts, Sonali brings that discipline and creative flair to the drawing board. She has over 20 years of experience in design – 16 of which have been as part of PKA. Having grown with the firm and being an integral part of the studio’s growth story, she has been instrumental in some of the most iconic projects created and implemented. The continual innovation and challenges at the studio keep her ticking at work. During her long association with the studio and the Principal, she has been a part of building the reputation that the firm enjoys amongst its clients. Her overall involvement in her projects gives her a sense of achievement at every successful completion. Sonali credits her eye for detail to her learning curve at PKA.
PK2, as she is referred to by the Principal, Preethi is the thoughtful one in the studio. This young architect, a silent but extremely effective team member – both in terms of her ideas and their implementation – is known to question the obvious, & often comes up with different solutions. She loves to work hard, & party harder!
One of the studio’s most ‘happy go lucky’ members, Harsh brings an innovative and lively approach to every project and loves to add the ‘twist’ to the designs. He enjoys witty humor, food, flying and all things gadget and gizmos! He loves to strive and bring new ideas and concepts to the table and is a dreamer of sorts!
Having attained his Masters in Interior Architecture at CEPT University, Sachin is passionately devoted to architecture. The inter-disciplinary collaboration between design, craft and technology enthralls him. With an inclination towards exploring various theories, he aspires to bridge the gap between research and realistic goals.
A graduate from SPA, New Delhi, Revina is an enthusiastic team player who is always up for a challenge.
She believes in providing innovative and rational design solutions whilst being an ardent patron of sustainable design. With a fascination for functional art and design, her desire to work on her skills is infectious and a sure asset to the firm.
Swati somya is a young and enthusiastic architect. She believes architecture is like music, with a power to mesmerize. Architecture for her is the perfect excuse to stay curious, learn and adapt. An avid backpacker, she strongly believes in the quote’ what is life worth if you live and have no story to tell’.
This new kid on the block ,a graduate from SPA bhopal,dreams of changing the world.According to Noel architecture and design is about people, nature and sustainable functionality.A voracious reader,poet and writer, he’s an ardent arsenal fan and movie addict.
His vibrant enthusiasm, ardour and focus makes him a natural fit in the PKA team.
With 7 years of experience under her belt, Nivedita has been a part of many path-breaking projects for the studio. Her quiet demeanor and meticulous working style are an extension of her personal beliefs and professional ethics. The maturity of thought and its translation into design is her biggest strength.
Her simple but thorough approach to life is the basis of Shruti’s professional acumen that she has honed over 6 years as a trained interior designer. A quiet performer, her contribution to
each project is precise and immaculate. Her work style is an extension of PKA design philosophy.
Sonali is admired for her precision by the team and has imbibed the true ethos of the studio in terms of not only its work culture but also the philosophy and beliefs. With her 5-year experience and diploma in interior design, she is successfully able to translate them into the projects.
Curiosity, enthusiasm and creativity aptly define Nina. While her imagination drives her, the versatility and positive energy she brings, prove to be an asset to the studio. She beats to Classic Rock and her true passion is drawn from Middle Eastern culture. A strong believer in community welfare, she as a designer, thrives to be part of the change around her.
The youngest of the team, Deshna brings fresh and new ideas to the studio. A movie buff and a professional artist, she treats all her projects like works of art.
Patience, a great sense of aesthetics, and innovation aid Deshna in her process of designing.
Her graduate degree in Microbiology helps Anagha micro-manage the workings of the studio. Nothing and no one misses her hawk eye – including the Principal – as she ensures everything and everyone is well within the stipulated timeline and on schedule. Her constant monitoring is successfully aimed at the smooth functioning of the studio as a complete unit.
This Arts graduate is the incessant heart of the studio who keeps everything moving, being the factotum of PKA. With an experience of about 4 years, Yogesh knows almost about everything that is needed to know about a smooth running design studio. That he holds a diploma in Computer Hardware Networking is a bonus.
